Hearty Chili



1 lb ground beef
1 onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, cored and diced
1 red bell pepper, cored and diced
2 jalapeno peppers, seeded if needed and diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 teaspoon cumin
3 tablespoons chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
3/4 cup dry red wine, beer or broth
32 ounces (4 cups) diced or crushed tomatoes
1 - 15 ounce can red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 - 15 ounce can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons hot sauce


*Note: this was made all in one dutch oven.  It can be made in a skillet and put in a crock pot for final cooking.

Brown beef in dutch oven just until done, drain if necessary, set aside.

Saute onion and peppers till soft.  Add garlic, cook for 30 seconds. Add tomato paste, chili powder, oregano, salt and pepper, cook for another 30 seconds to a minute and add wine to deglaze pan.

Return beef to pan, add tomatoes, sugar and hot sauce.  Simmer on low for 45 minutes - an hour. Top with favorite toppings and enjoy.
